In the early afternoon of October 5, 2014, 24-year-old Jaleesa Brooks was fatally shot during a home invasion in the apartment she shared with her fiancé in Baltimore, Maryland. Two masked intruders forced their way into the residence, demanding money and valuables.
During the robbery, the assailants, who were armed, confronted Brooks' fiancé and her three-year-old daughter. While the robbery was in progress, Brooks was in a bedroom.
A single gunshot was heard, and Brooks was subsequently found with a gunshot wound to her upper chest. She was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
An investigation led police to identify Darius Baker as a suspect. Another individual, known as 'Little Tray,' was also implicated, though his identity and whereabouts remained unknown at the time of subsequent legal proceedings. Marquis Curtis was later arrested and charged in connection with the crime. Following a jury trial, Curtis was convicted of conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit first-degree burglary. He was acquitted of other charges. For his role in the events that led to Brooks' death, the court sentenced him to eighteen years in prison.
