In the early morning hours of October 5, 2014, the life of 28-year-old Ashley Cornish, a Black female from Cambridge, Maryland, was tragically cut short. She was outside the Dorchester Elks Lodge 223, where a private party was taking place, when gunfire erupted. Cornish was struck by a stray bullet and was pronounced dead at the scene. Another individual, 25-year-old LeRon Todd, was also fatally shot during the incident.
Witnesses at the scene reported hearing an argument just before the shots were fired.
The investigation into the double homicide led Cambridge police to identify Terrance Jermaine Brown as the suspect. It was determined that Brown had approached and shot LeRon Todd as he was leaving the Elks Lodge. Ashley Cornish, who was sitting outside the club at the time, was an unintended victim of the violence that unfolded. In the chaotic moments that followed the shooting, Brown himself was shot by another individual as he attempted to flee the scene.
Terrance Jermaine Brown was subsequently arrested and faced a series of charges, including two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree murder, and one count of attempted murder, along with assault and other related charges. In 2017, a court sentenced Brown to two consecutive life terms in prison for the deaths of Ashley Cornish and LeRon Todd. His conviction was secured through witness testimonies and evidence collected from the crime scene. Legal proceedings that followed the initial trial included an appeal where Brown's defense moved to suppress incriminating statements he had made to the police, arguing they were obtained in violation of his Miranda rights. While the court acknowledged that his rights were violated, his conviction was ultimately upheld.
