Gladys Tordil, a 44-year-old chemistry teacher, was fatally shot on May 5, 2016, in the parking lot of High Point High School in Beltsville, Maryland. She was there to pick up her two daughters, who were students at the school. Her estranged husband, Eulalio Tordil, a 62-year-old employee of the Federal Protective Service, confronted her as she sat in her SUV.
A man who witnessed the confrontation and attempted to intervene was shot and wounded before Eulalio Tordil shot his wife multiple times. This tragic event was captured on school security cameras. Gladys Tordil had previously obtained a protective order against her husband due to a history of domestic violence.
Following the murder of his estranged wife, Eulalio Tordil evaded capture and went on a shooting spree the next day. He shot three people at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda, killing one man, and then drove to a grocery store in Aspen Hill where he fatally shot a woman in her car. His actions prompted a large-scale manhunt that put local schools and facilities on lockdown.
Eulalio Tordil was arrested without incident later that day in the parking lot of a shopping center in Aspen Hill. He was subsequently charged with multiple counts, including first-degree murder for the death of his wife and the two other victims, as well as attempted murder. He later pleaded guilty to the charges. In July 2017, he was sentenced to four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole for the Montgomery County shootings. In September 2017, he received two additional life sentences for the murder of his wife and the attempted murder of the bystander who tried to help her.
