In a tragic turn of events on June 6, 2016, 17-year-old Kymici Brown was fatally shot in a home in the 1300 block of Tyler Avenue in Annapolis, Maryland. Brown, a student at Broadneck High School where she was a member of the track team, was found with a gunshot wound to the chest and was transported to Anne Arundel Medical Center, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
The initial investigation led to the swift arrest of 19-year-old Ryan Surgeon of Laurel, who was identified as
Brown's boyfriend. Surgeon was present at the scene when authorities arrived and claimed the shooting was accidental. He told investigators that he had been smoking marijuana and dancing with a loaded handgun when it discharged, striking Brown. At the time of the incident, Surgeon was on probation for an unrelated case in Prince George's County.
Surgeon was initially charged with first and second-degree murder, among other lesser offenses. He later pleaded guilty to manslaughter and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. In December 2016, Ryan Surgeon, then 20, was sentenced to eight years in prison for Brown's death. The sentence included a provision that he would not be eligible for parole for the first five years.
