In the quiet town of Elkton, Maryland, the evening of May 3, 2015, took a tragic turn, forever altering the lives of one family. Inside his home, 38-year-old Derrick Smith, a Black/African American male, was fatally shot. The violence of that night did not end with him; his 22-year-old daughter, Tayonna Russ, was also killed, an innocent bystander in a dispute that had reached its lethal conclusion.
The discovery of their bodies by Derrick's girlfriend and Tayonna's mother marked the beginning of a long and arduous investigation.
For more than three years, the case of the double homicide on East Village Road remained a painful open wound for the family and the community. Investigators diligently pursued leads, and early in the process, a primary suspect emerged: Erik John McNeely. The motive, as detectives would uncover, was a festering financial dispute. Smith owed McNeely a sum of money, and McNeely's repeated, unsuccessful attempts to collect the debt had apparently curdled into a deadly resolve.
The night of the murders, after watching the highly anticipated boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, McNeely drove to Derrick Smith's residence. There, authorities believe, he confronted Smith and shot him. Tragically, Tayonna Russ was also present and is thought to have been caught in the crossfire, a witness to her father's murder before becoming a victim herself. The breakthrough in the case came in November 2018, when the Elkton police, after years of painstaking work, arrested 38-year-old Erik John McNeely. He was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder, bringing a long-awaited sense of progress to a case that had haunted investigators and the victims' loved ones for years.
