In the summer of 2015, a quiet evening in an Oxon Hill, Maryland neighborhood was shattered by the sound of gunfire. On July 20th, at approximately 8:00 p.m., police responded to reports of a shooting in the 700 block of Maury Avenue. Upon their arrival, they discovered the body of Hudson Lal Bhagwat, a 37-year-old man, lying in the street. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Bhagwat was identified as a resident of the area, though his home was on a different street. One source identified him as a Black/African American male.
Investigators from the Prince George's County Police Department's Homicide Unit immediately began to piece together the events of that night. It soon became apparent to them that this was not a random act of violence. While they did not immediately identify a motive or any suspects, detectives believed Bhagwat was specifically targeted. In the days following the shooting, police canvassed the neighborhood, distributing flyers and urging residents to come forward with any information that might lead to an arrest. A substantial reward of up to $25,000 was offered for information leading to the indictment of the individual or individuals responsible for Bhagwat's death.
Further investigation into Bhagwat's background revealed a prior conviction for drug distribution in 2008, which led to speculation that his murder could have been connected to his past. Despite these leads and the public appeal for information, the case grew cold. In the years that have passed since Hudson Bhagwat's murder, there have been no public announcements regarding any arrests made or suspects identified in connection with the crime. The case remains an unsolved homicide, leaving a family without answers and a community with the memory of a life cut short by violence.
