Restaurant manager and father of 3, shot and killed during a robbery In the Gentilly area of New Orleans, on the evening of December 6, 2017, Adnan Alasar, a 51-year-old Syrian immigrant, was working at his Subway restaurant on Caton Street. A husband and father of three, Alasar was known as an embodiment of the American dream, having successfully built three businesses in the New Orleans area. Friends described him as a proud American and a giving man, known for his acts of kindness, such as providing food to the homeless.
Around 7:15 p.m., a man entered
the restaurant and a tragic altercation ensued. The man, armed with a gun, engaged in an argument with Alasar before firing two shots, fatally wounding him. Emergency services transported Alasar to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. It was reported that this was not the first time Alasar had experienced a robbery at his business.
The New Orleans Police Department quickly identified a suspect in the shooting. Lavar Marquise Butler, who was 20 years old at the time, was named as the individual responsible for Alasar's death. Believing he may have fled to Houston, Texas, authorities issued a warrant for his arrest on a charge of first-degree murder.
Following an investigation, Lavar Butler was apprehended. He later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter for his role in the fatal armed robbery. As a result of his guilty plea, Butler was sentenced to 60 years in prison, bringing a close to the legal proceedings in the case of Adnan Alasar's death.
