On January 12, 2017, the young Black man was walking with a 20-year-old companion in the Coldstream-Homestead-Montebello neighborhood. As they made their way, a black van approached, and a passenger within opened fire, unleashing a hail of bullets that would forever alter the lives of those present.
Mcelveen suffered fatal injuries in the sudden onslaught of violence, his future
extinguished in a moment of senseless brutality. His friend was also struck by the gunfire but managed to survive the attack. The black van sped away from the scene, leaving behind a community to grapple with the loss of a promising young life. Desean, who was known for his artistic abilities and his involvement with the local organization Baltimore Youth Arts, was remembered as a talented individual with a bright future ahead of him.
In the wake of the shooting, the Baltimore Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide. Detectives worked to piece together the events of that tragic evening, searching for leads and appealing to the public for any information that might bring those responsible to justice. Despite their efforts, the case grew cold. To date, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Desean Mcelveen, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The community and his family continue to await answers and closure in the unsolved killing of the promising young artist.
