A young man of Indian descent, 25-year-old Sai Charan Nakka, was tragically killed in Baltimore, Maryland, on June 19, 2022. A software engineer who had been working in the city for two years, he was discovered inside his 2022 silver Hyundai Tucson on the shoulder of southbound I-95 near the Caton Avenue exit in the early morning hours.
Initially reported as a single-vehicle collision around 4:30 a.m., responding Maryland Transportation Authority Police officers found Sai Charan, the
sole occupant of the vehicle, with a gunshot wound to his head. He was immediately transported to the University of Maryland R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased shortly after 6:30 a.m.
The investigation into the death of the Hanover, Maryland resident was quickly classified as a suspected homicide. Early reports indicated that an unidentified Black man may have opened fire on his vehicle. The Baltimore Police Department's homicide unit has taken the lead in the ongoing investigation. Authorities have appealed to the public for any information regarding suspicious activity or any sightings of Nakka or his vehicle around the time of the incident.
Originally from the Nalgonda district of Telangana, India, Sai Charan was the son of a retired teacher. He had moved to the United States in 2020 for his graduate studies and had only recently purchased his car. His family in India was devastated by the news of his untimely death. As of late 2022, no arrests have been publicly announced, and no specific suspects have been named by authorities.
