In the quiet community of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, a tragic event unfolded on an August evening, leaving two individuals deceased in what authorities would later describe as a murder-suicide. On August 15, 2017, police were dispatched to an apartment in the 14000 block of New Acadia Lane to conduct a welfare check. Upon their arrival at approximately 7:45 p.m., they made a grim discovery.
Inside the residence, officers found 53-year-old Kiwa Toomer and 54-year-old Bernard Williams, both
suffering from gunshot wounds. Toomer, a female resident of Upper Marlboro, and Williams, who was from Brooklyn, New York, were both pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators determined that Toomer and Williams had been in a relationship.
Further investigation by the Prince George's County Police Department's Homicide Unit led them to believe that Toomer was the suspect in the incident. It appeared that she fatally shot Williams before turning the gun on herself. Her gunshot wound was described by police as being apparently self-inflicted. At the time of the initial reports, detectives were still working to determine a motive for the tragic events that transpired.
