On a tragic day in June of 2006, Stephanie Marie King-Sperling, a 34-year-old mother, was found dead in her Upper Marlboro, Maryland, home. A graduate of the University of Maryland and a financial analyst at the Securities and Exchange Commission, she was described by her family as beautiful, caring, and hardworking. Her life, however, was cut short in what police investigated as a devastating murder-suicide.
Just two weeks before her death, Stephanie had married Richard Earl Sperling
Jr., the 38-year-old father of her three young sons. The marriage was a source of concern for Stephanie's family, who described her new husband as verbally abusive and controlling. Neighbors also reported that police had been called to the family's townhouse on previous occasions due to allegations of abuse. Despite these concerns, Stephanie's father believed she married Sperling in an effort to bring her family closer together.
The horrific discovery was made by the couple's two other children, a 5-year-old and the 2-year-old twin brother of the youngest victim. Upon entering their home, they found their mother, Stephanie, their brother, Taylor Anthony Sperling, age 2, and their father, Richard Sperling Jr., all deceased from gunshot wounds. Investigators at the scene quickly identified Richard Sperling Jr. as the likely gunman in the apparent murder-suicide. The motive for the tragic event remained under investigation, leaving a community in shock and a family to grapple with an immense and sudden loss.
