In the late afternoon of March 19, 2018, the life of 39-year-old Nicholas Duran Leonard was tragically cut short in Capitol Heights, Maryland. A Black male from the nearby community of Suitland, he was discovered inside a vehicle on Drylog Street, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. First responders were dispatched to the area after reports of gunfire and quickly transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Known affectionately as 'Nick,' he was remembered by loved ones as a joyful and generous man who cherished his family, especially his daughter and fiancée.
For years, the investigation into Nicholas Leonard's death continued, with authorities initially stating they did not believe the shooting was a random act. A reward of up to $25,000 was offered for information leading to an arrest and indictment in the case. The community was left seeking answers as detectives worked to identify a suspect and a motive behind the fatal shooting.
A significant breakthrough in the case came in December 2024, when Prince George's County officials announced the arrest of 43-year-old Ricky Minor Jr. Minor was charged with first and second-degree murder in connection with Leonard's death. According to police, the two men were acquainted, and the shooting allegedly stemmed from an argument. Following his arrest, Minor was held without bond as he awaited legal proceedings.
