On Easter Sunday, April 1, 2018, 30-year-old Erica Lynn Gould's life was tragically cut short in her Salisbury, Maryland home. A substance abuse counselor and mother of three, she had just returned from a church service with her children when her ex-husband, Jameal Rashawn Gould, appeared at her residence. An argument that began earlier in the day escalated, leading to a violent confrontation witnessed by Erica's sister and her 9-year-old son.
Jameal, who was prohibited from possessing a
firearm due to a prior federal drug conviction, brandished a gun. His initial attempt to fire the weapon failed, giving Erica a brief moment to flee upstairs. She sought refuge in a bedroom, but Jameal pursued her, breaking down the door. In a desperate attempt to escape, Erica climbed through a second-floor window onto an awning above the front porch. It was there that Jameal shot her multiple times. Expert testimony later suggested she was likely on her knees with her hands raised in a defensive posture when the fatal shot to her head was fired.
First responders found Erica on the roof with multiple gunshot wounds to her upper body. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to her injuries later that day. Jameal Gould fled the scene, initiating a three-day manhunt. He was apprehended by police a few days later during a traffic stop in Salisbury.
Jameal Rashawn Gould was arrested and faced a litany of charges, including first and second-degree murder, home invasion, assault, and various firearm offenses. In January 2020, after a two-day trial that included emotional testimony from her family, a Wicomico County jury found him guilty on all counts. The prosecution described the act as an 'execution.' Jameal Gould was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, with an additional 85 years.
