On a tragic summer day, June 28, 2018, Robert 'Bob' Hiaasen, a 59-year-old male journalist and assistant editor, lost his life in a horrific act of violence at his workplace, the Capital Gazette newspaper office in Annapolis, Maryland. He was one of five employees killed in what authorities described as a targeted attack. The gunman, armed with a shotgun, barricaded the rear exit of the newsroom to prevent escape before opening fire.
The perpetrator was identified as Jarrod Ramos, a
38-year-old man who held a long-standing grudge against the newspaper. His animosity stemmed from a 2011 article the Capital Gazette published detailing his guilty plea to a criminal harassment charge involving a former high school classmate. Ramos had filed a defamation lawsuit against the paper in 2012, which was ultimately dismissed. In the years leading up to the shooting, he sent threatening letters and messages to the newspaper. On the day of the attack, Ramos mailed letters to a lawyer, a judge, and the Maryland Court of Special Appeals, stating his intention to go to the newsroom and 'kill every person present.'
Police arrived at the scene within a minute of the first reports and found Ramos hiding under a desk in the newsroom. He was taken into custody without further incident. In the aftermath, investigators used facial recognition technology to identify him as he was not carrying identification. He was charged with five counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted first-degree murder, six counts of first-degree assault, and eleven counts of firearm use in the commission of a felony.
In October 2019, Jarrod Ramos pleaded guilty to all 23 counts against him but claimed he was not criminally responsible due to his mental state, Maryland's version of an insanity defense. However, in July 2021, a jury found him criminally responsible for his actions, rejecting his insanity plea after a trial that included testimony from survivors of the attack. On September 28, 2021, Ramos was sentenced to five life terms in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional life sentence and 345 years.
