On the afternoon of August 18, 2018, Vuai Capri Green Jr., a 24-year-old male, was standing in the 2300 block of Harford Road in Baltimore, Maryland, when he was fatally shot. The cause of his death was determined to be multiple gunshots, with a particularly grievous wound to the back of his head. Green was transported to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting led police to quickly identify a suspect with the aid of surveillance
cameras from nearby stores. Richard Grier was arrested and charged with Mr. Green's murder. The evidence against Grier included surveillance footage that appeared to show a man in a green shirt, identified as Grier, approach Green, pull a handgun from his pocket, and fire multiple shots, causing Green to fall to the ground.
During a police interrogation, Grier admitted to being in the 2300 block of Harford Road at the time of the shooting and identified himself in one of the surveillance videos wearing a green shirt. However, he denied being the shooter and brandishing a handgun. A second surveillance video from a different angle appeared to contradict his denial. Grier, who had turned 18 just weeks before the incident, was charged with murder after an eight-hour interrogation.
