On the evening of September 15, 2018, in Baltimore, Maryland, 18-year-old Kahlil Alston, also known as 'Lil,' was fatally shot on North Grantley Street, near the border of the Allendale and Edmondson Village neighborhoods. His death marked the 200th homicide in the city that year. Emergency responders found Alston on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds and transported him to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Kahlil's girlfriend, who was with him at the time of the
shooting, remembered him as someone who was always there for her. She later testified about the events of that night. According to her testimony, a man pulled out a gun and shot Kahlil in the face. The girlfriend was able to identify the shooter to the police.
The individual identified by Alston's girlfriend, Eugene James, was subsequently arrested and charged in connection with the murder. Following a jury trial, James was convicted of first-degree murder and the use of a handgun in the commission of a crime of violence. For these crimes, he received a life sentence for the murder, with an additional ten-year consecutive sentence for the handgun charge. The initial five years of the handgun sentence were to be served without the possibility of parole. Publicly available information regarding the motive for the shooting is limited.
