In the quiet neighborhood of Colesville, Maryland, a tragedy unfolded in the early hours of September 17, 2018, forever altering the lives of a local family. Eleven-year-old Asian female, Mina Kim, was grievously wounded in a domestic-related shooting inside her Amberleigh Drive home. The incident, which police later classified as a murder-suicide, also claimed the lives of her mother, 48-year-old Sang Yeon Kim, and her 10-year-old brother, Andy Kim.
A 22-year-old woman, also a family member, was injured in the attack but survived.
Responding to a report of multiple people shot, Montgomery County police officers arrived at the residence to a devastating scene. They discovered 57-year-old Yong Mun Kim and his wife, Sang Yeon Kim, deceased inside the home. The preliminary investigation led detectives to believe that Yong Mun Kim had shot his wife and three children before turning the gun on himself. There were no prior records of domestic violence calls to the address, leaving the community in shock.
Mina and her younger brother, Andy, were rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Tragically, Andy succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving. For several days, Mina fought for her life, but on Thursday, September 20, 2018, she too passed away from the injuries she sustained. The surviving 22-year-old victim was reported to be in stable condition. The motive for the horrific event was believed to be related to the end of the parents' marriage. In the wake of the tragedy, community members mourned the loss of the two young siblings, remembering them as bright and beloved children. A fundraiser was established to help with the costs of sending Mina and Andy to Korea for their final burial.
