In the quiet town of Havre de Grace, Maryland, the autumn of 2018 was shattered by a violent act that ended the life of a 61-year-old man, Jeffrey Mark Coudon. On the morning of Sunday, November 11th, Coudon was discovered in his apartment in the 200 block of North Washington Street suffering from what was initially reported as a laceration. However, first responders soon realized the grim reality of the situation: he had been shot.
Coudon was rushed to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where medical professionals fought to save his life. Despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries three days later, on Wednesday, November 14, 2018. Following an autopsy, his death was officially ruled a homicide, prompting an intensive investigation by the Havre de Grace Police Department. Detectives assured the public that they believed it was an isolated incident and that there was no ongoing threat to the community.
For five months, the investigation into Coudon's murder continued, seemingly with few public leads. Then, in April 2019, a breakthrough was announced with the arrests of two men. Joseph Daniel Parrish, 27, of Aberdeen, was charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, retaliation against a witness, handgun on his person, use of a firearm in a felony, destruction of evidence, theft, robbery, armed robbery, and home invasion. Another man, Robert Lee Zeman III, 32, of Havre de Grace, was charged as an accessory to murder after the fact, as well as offenses related to the illegal purchase and sale of a firearm.
The subsequent legal proceedings revealed the details of the crime. Joseph Daniel Parrish stood trial and, in October 2019, a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder, retaliation against a witness, and using a firearm in a felony crime. The following June, he was sentenced to life in prison for the murder, with an additional 20 years for witness retaliation and another 20 years for the firearm charge, to be served consecutively. In February 2020, Robert Lee Zeman III was convicted for his role as an accessory to the murder. The resolution of the case brought a measure of closure to the family and friends of Jeffrey Mark Coudon, whose life was tragically cut short.
