In the early evening chill of December 15, 2023, tragedy struck in the Oliver neighborhood of Baltimore, forever altering the lives connected to Marvin Jason Jackson Jr. A Black male, at the age of 26, Jackson became another victim of the city's ongoing struggle with gun violence. The fatal encounter unfolded at approximately 5:35 p.m. in the 1800 block of Aiken Street, a location that would soon become the focal point of a homicide investigation.

were drawn to the scene by a ShotSpotter alert, a now all-too-common sound in many urban landscapes. Upon their arrival, they discovered Jackson suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound to his neck. Emergency medical services acted swiftly, transporting him to the renowned Johns Hopkins Hospital. Despite the urgent medical intervention and the efforts of the hospital staff, Marvin Jackson's injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced deceased at 6:00 p.m.
The investigation into Jackson's murder led authorities to review area surveillance footage, which captured the moments leading up to the shooting. The footage showed two men exiting a white 2020 Volkswagen Passat and approaching Jackson. One of these men, later identified as Joseph Walker, was seen shooting Jackson with a handgun equipped with a laser sight. Following the shooting, Walker was observed going through Jackson's pockets, while his accomplice, Joseph Coates, was seen picking up an unspecified item from near Jackson's body.
In a significant development in the case, a jury delivered its verdict on July 24, 2025. Joseph Walker, 50, was found guilty of second-degree murder, armed robbery, and firearm use in a felony crime of violence for his role in the death of Marvin Jackson. The jury, however, acquitted him of the more severe charge of first-degree murder. The incident was characterized as the result of a drug deal that had gone wrong. During the investigation, Walker admitted to detectives that he was present at the scene to purchase drugs from Jackson. A sentencing date for Walker has not yet been set. His co-defendant, 41-year-old Joseph Coates, was also implicated in the crime.
