On the evening of December 30, 2018, the life of 22-year-old Tyamonee Johnson was tragically cut short in Oxon Hill, Maryland. A former football player for Bullis School and Wagner College, Johnson was visiting his family in Fort Washington for the holidays. He was a new father to a 10-month-old daughter and was pursuing a master's degree in business after recently graduating from college.
That Sunday night, at approximately 7:40 pm, police responded to a report of a shooting in the 1700 block of Mystic Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered Johnson outside, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the young man's death quickly moved forward, and authorities determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence. Instead, they identified the incident as a domestic-related homicide. According to police, the shooting stemmed from a dispute involving a third party. Within days, a suspect was identified and taken into custody by Prince George’s County Police.
The individual arrested in connection with the fatal shooting was 21-year-old Rondell Fletcher of Southeast Washington. Fletcher was subsequently charged with first and second-degree murder, along with other related charges, for the death of Tyamonee Johnson. Following his arrest, Fletcher was held in the custody of the Department of Corrections. The promising future of a young father and scholar was abruptly ended, leaving a family and community to mourn a senseless loss.
