In the early morning hours of August 1, 2019, the quiet of a Hyattsville, Maryland neighborhood was shattered by the sound of gunfire. Outside a home on the 4600 block of Burlington Road, 38-year-old Dante Campbell was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. First responders were called to the scene around 3:40 a.m. and quickly transported him to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he died a short time later.
Investigators with the Prince George's County
Police Department began to piece together the events that led to the deadly shooting. It was soon determined that the incident was not a random act of violence. The investigation pointed to a dispute between Campbell and an acquaintance. Detectives worked to identify a suspect and uncover the motive behind the fatal encounter.
Their efforts led them to 38-year-old Dereck Vaughn Clark of Southeast D.C. Authorities arrested Vaughn-Clark in connection with the fatal shooting. Police believe that an argument between Vaughn-Clark and Campbell escalated, resulting in the tragic death of Dante Campbell. Following his arrest, Dereck Vaughn-Clark was charged with first-degree murder.
