In the late summer of 2019, the life of 27-year-old Nelson Standifer of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, was tragically cut short. On September 18th, at approximately 12:15 in the afternoon, police responded to a report of a shooting in the 8200 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Highway in Glenarden. They discovered Standifer in the parking lot of a convenience store, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate response, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the homicide revealed the killing was not a random act of violence. Authorities determined that the fatal shooting was the culmination of an ongoing dispute between Standifer and two acquaintances. Homicide unit detectives identified 31-year-old DeAndre Stevenson of Riverdale, Georgia, and 25-year-old Ryan Smith of Landover as the primary suspects in the case. Both men were subsequently charged with first-degree murder and other related charges for their alleged involvement in Standifer's death.
Following the charges, Ryan Smith was taken into custody by the Department of Corrections and held on a no-bond status. DeAndre Stevenson, who was located in Georgia, was also taken into custody and awaited extradition back to Prince George's County to face the charges against him. The Prince George's County Police Department handled the investigation as they oversee all homicides within the City of Glenarden.
