On a Wednesday evening in Baltimore, Maryland, the life of 21-year-old Donnell Brockington was tragically cut short. On November 13, 2019, Brockington was on the 2600 block of McElderry Street when he was gunned down in what prosecutors would later describe as an execution-style murder. An autopsy revealed he had suffered twelve gunshot wounds.
The sound of gunfire attracted the attention of nearby Baltimore Police officers who witnessed a gold Infiniti speeding away from the scene.
A pursuit ensued, which ended when the vehicle crashed into a tree at the intersection of Ashland Avenue and Caroline Street. Four of the six occupants of the car were apprehended, while two managed to flee on foot.
The four individuals arrested were Anthony Clark, 19; James Dunbar, 18; Shamar Jerry, 19; and William Thornton, 26. They were subsequently charged with first-degree murder and various weapons offenses in connection with Brockington's death. Investigators recovered multiple firearms from the crashed vehicle.
In July 2021, all four co-defendants rejected plea offers. The case proceeded to a jury trial in late 2022. The trial concluded in December of that year with a series of verdicts. William Thornton was found guilty of first-degree murder. Anthony Clark and Shamar Jerry were found not guilty of murder but were convicted of several weapons charges. The jury could not reach a unanimous decision on the murder charge against James Dunbar, resulting in a mistrial on that count; however, he was also found guilty of weapons charges.
The sentencings for the four men took place over the following year. In May 2023, James Dunbar was sentenced to a total of 20 years in prison for possession of an assault rifle, illegal possession of a firearm, and conspiracy to use a firearm in a crime of violence. On the same day, Shamar Jerry received a total sentence of 15 years, with the first five years without the possibility of parole, for being a minor in possession of a firearm and conspiracy to use a firearm in a crime of violence.
In June 2023, Anthony Clark was sentenced to 15 years for conspiracy to use a firearm in a felony violent crime, with a consecutive five years for firearm possession as a minor, totaling 20 years of incarceration. During the sentencing, Brockington's mother expressed her forgiveness towards the defendants.
Finally, in October 2023, William Thornton, the only one of the four convicted of murder, was sentenced. He received a life sentence for first-degree murder, a concurrent life sentence for conspiracy to commit murder, and a consecutive 18 years for firearm use in a felony violent crime and possession of a handgun in a vehicle.
