In the quiet suburban landscape of Columbia, Maryland, a story of profound loss and a lengthy quest for justice began to unfold on the night of July 31, 2020. Rabiah Ahmad, a 30-year-old female, was inside a residence on Dovecote Drive when the tranquility of the evening was shattered by the sound of multiple gunshots. Several bullets penetrated the house from the outside, and one fatally struck Ahmad, who was 28 weeks pregnant at the time.
Rushed to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, she succumbed to her injuries. In a desperate attempt to save her child, doctors delivered the baby girl, named Ahja, who was born in critical condition. Tragically, the infant's fight for life was short-lived, and she passed away five days later on August 5.
The initial investigation into the double homicide left detectives with few leads. It was determined that Ahmad, who had only recently moved to Maryland and had been staying at the residence for a few months, was not the intended target of the shooting. The motive remained a mystery, and for years, the case grew cold, leaving a grieving family and community searching for answers. Despite the passage of time, law enforcement officials and Ahmad’s family continued to appeal to the public for any information that might lead to a breakthrough. Rewards were offered in the hope that someone would come forward with the key to solving the senseless act of violence. The Council on American-Islamic Relations also offered support to her family, who are Muslim.
A significant development in the case came nearly five years after the tragic event. In April 2025, the Howard County police announced the arrest of a suspect, 31-year-old Edward Robinson of Columbia. The break in the cold case reportedly came from a tip that led investigators to Robinson. It is believed that Robinson had a dispute with two other individuals who lived at the same residence as Ahmad and that the gunfire was intended as a warning for them. Robinson was charged with two counts of first- and second-degree murder, as well as related assault and handgun violations. During a search of his residence, a firearm of the same caliber as the projectiles found at the crime scene was recovered and was to be tested to determine if it was the murder weapon. The arrest brought a measure of hope for closure to a family that had endured years of uncertainty and pain.
