In the summer of 2025, the life of Shannon Michelle Buschner, a 47-year-old woman, was tragically cut short in what police have described as a domestic murder-suicide. On the evening of June 30th, a friend went to check on Buschner at her home on Summer Blossom Lane in Columbia, Maryland, and made a devastating discovery. Inside the residence lay the bodies of Buschner and her 23-year-old boyfriend, Ahmad Kharma.
Howard County police were called to the scene at approximately 8:15 p.m.
The investigation that followed led detectives to believe that Kharma shot and killed Buschner before turning the gun on himself. A firearm was recovered near Kharma's body at the scene. Authorities have stated that they do not suspect any other individuals were involved in the incident. The exact time of the shooting and a clear motive remained under investigation. It was confirmed by law enforcement that the two were in a relationship and were living together at the residence where they were found.
In the wake of this tragedy, Shannon Buschner was remembered as an intelligent, warm, and loyal individual who formed deep and lasting bonds with those around her. Originally from Rochester, New York, she was a graduate of Honeoye Falls–Lima High School and later earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Maryland. For 13 years, she had built a successful career in the nuclear power industry. Following her death, community members circulated purple flyers in her neighborhood to honor her memory and raise awareness about domestic violence.
