In the late hours of a Tuesday evening in Baltimore, Maryland, a 27-year-old Black man named Mikal James Mayo was returning from a store when his life was abruptly ended. On December 1, 2020, at approximately 10:22 p.m., police were called to the 5500 block of Bowleys Lane for a report of a shooting. Arriving officers found Mikal, known affectionately as 'Mikey,' in the vestibule of his girlfriend's apartment building, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Medics pronounced him deceased at the scene. The incident was a double shooting, with a second individual also being shot but surviving their injuries.
The investigation into the planned and targeted attack revealed a chaotic scene where at least sixteen rounds had been fired from no fewer than four different firearms. Though no eyewitnesses testified, surveillance footage captured crucial moments. Shortly after Mikal entered the building, a young man, later identified as 19-year-old Khalil Cloude, was seen stumbling out of the vestibule with a gun in his hand. Cloude had also sustained three gunshot wounds during the shootout and was later transported to a hospital.
Authorities arrested Khalil Cloude in connection with Mikal Mayo's murder. The prosecution argued that the murder was premeditated, stemming from an argument between Mayo and Cloude that occurred just before the fatal encounter. Cloude was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and multiple firearms offenses. During the trial, Mikal's family described the profound loss of a man who was a gifted student, a talented athlete, and a loving father to his young son, Noah. They spoke of his bright smile and his dream to 'change the world.' Mikal's father, after viewing the surveillance video of the incident, expressed his immense pain and called for justice.
On April 19, 2022, a jury found Khalil Cloude not guilty of first-degree murder but convicted him of the lesser charge of second-degree murder, as well as use of a firearm during a felony violent crime, having a handgun on his person, and possession of a firearm as a minor. On November 29, 2022, a judge sentenced Cloude to a total of 45 years in prison. The sentence included 40 years for the murder charge and a consecutive five years for being a minor in possession of a firearm. Throughout the proceedings, Cloude maintained his innocence.
