In the quiet city of Salisbury, Maryland, the life of 26-year-old Devonta Fagans was tragically cut short on a cold winter's night. On the evening of Friday, January 29, 2021, officers from the Salisbury Police Department were dispatched to the 500 block of Emory Court following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival at the apartment complex, they discovered Fagans in the parking lot, suffering from what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services promptly
transported Fagans to TidalHealth Hospital in Salisbury. Despite the efforts of the medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Saturday, January 30, 2021. His body was then taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy to determine the official cause of death. The investigation into the fatal shooting was soon taken over by the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit at the request of the Salisbury Police Department.
The subsequent investigation, a collaborative effort between the Maryland State Police, the Salisbury Police Department, and the Wicomico County State's Attorney's Office, quickly honed in on a suspect. Less than a week after the shooting, on February 3, 2021, authorities arrested 28-year-old Levonte Javar Martin of Crisfield, Maryland. The investigation revealed that Martin had traveled to the Parkside Apartments in Salisbury on the night of the incident and laid in wait for Fagans. When Fagans arrived and exited his vehicle, Martin ambushed him, firing multiple shots before fleeing to a nearby apartment complex to secure transportation back to Crisfield.
Martin was charged with first and second-degree murder for his role in the death of Devonta Fagans. Following a three-day jury trial, he was convicted of the charges brought against him. The Wicomico County State's Attorney's Office had indicated their intent to seek a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
