On a spring evening in Prince George's County, Maryland, the life of a promising 20-year-old male college athlete, Dorian Hurd, was tragically cut short. On March 18, 2021, Hurd had gone to a tattoo shop in the 4300 block of St. Barnabas Road in Temple Hills. When he stepped outside the establishment to take a phone call, a man walked past him without any verbal exchange. Moments later, that same individual, unprovoked, opened fire, striking Hurd multiple times.
The young man, who was a student at the University of the District of Columbia and a graduate of Blake High School, succumbed to a gunshot wound to the head at the scene.
The senseless act of violence was captured on surveillance video, which played a crucial role in the subsequent investigation. The footage showed the assailant walking past Hurd before turning and firing. The shooter was identified as Tevin Ream, an Oxon Hill man who was 32 years old at the time of his conviction. Following the shooting, Ream fled across the street and attempted to dispose of the handgun by hiding it in a nearby dry-cleaning business. However, law enforcement officers were able to apprehend him as he exited the establishment. At the time of the incident, Ream was reportedly out on bond for a prior violent gun-related offense.
The legal proceedings that followed brought some measure of closure to Dorian Hurd's grieving family and friends, who were a constant presence throughout the trial. In July 2023, a jury found Tevin Ream guilty of first-degree murder and use of a handgun in the commission of a felony, among other related charges. Prosecutors argued that the attack was intentional and without any apparent motive. The court heard emotional testimony from Hurd's loved ones, who remembered him as a sweet and vibrant young man with a bright future.
In February 2024, Tevin Ream was sentenced for the murder of Dorian Hurd. He received a sentence of life in prison plus an additional 38 years. The sentencing judge and the state's attorney for Prince George's County highlighted the heinous and senseless nature of the crime, emphasizing that Ream's actions had not only devastated a family but had also deeply impacted the community. Throughout the legal process, no clear motive for the killing was ever established, leaving a painful void for those who knew and loved the young athlete whose life was so abruptly and inexplicably taken.
