In the spring of 2021, a tragic event unfolded in Southwest Baltimore that cut short the life of Ivan Joseph Green. On April 17th, police responded to a call for an aggravated assault in the 1900 block of Braddish Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered 38-year-old Ivan Joseph Green unresponsive, with signs of trauma to his body. Medics were called to the scene, but sadly, Green was pronounced deceased.
The cause of his death was later determined to be a fatal shooting.
The investigation into the death of the male victim quickly led homicide detectives to a person of interest. A few days later, on April 21st, Baltimore Police announced the arrest of 20-year-old Cortez Johnson. Johnson was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with Green's death. Further details emerged revealing a familial connection between the two men; Cortez Johnson was identified as Ivan Joseph Green's stepson.
The legal proceedings against Cortez Johnson moved forward, and he ultimately pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in a felony violent crime. However, before he could be sentenced for his role in his stepfather's death, Johnson himself died. As a result of his death, the murder case against him was officially closed by the Baltimore City Circuit Court in January 2023.
