On the night of May 28, 2020, the promising life of 19-year-old Aaron James Sutton was tragically cut short in a fatal shooting in Baltimore, Maryland. A Black/African American male, Sutton was a freshman engineering student at Howard University, known by friends and family as 'A.J.' He was a charismatic and brilliant young man with a bright future, recognized for his talents in music, dance, and art, as well as his academic gifts.
Shortly before midnight, police responded to reports of
gunfire in the 5600 block of Wayne Avenue in the Howard Park neighborhood. Upon arrival, they discovered Sutton and another man, 21-year-old Oz Shiheed Tatum, inside a vehicle, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene. Neighbors reported hearing the gunshots and seeing someone flee from the vehicle.
The senseless death of A.J. Sutton left his family, including his mother and sisters, completely devastated. They remembered him as a driven and exceptional individual who had so much potential to achieve great things and positively impact others. His former teachers and coaches also recalled him as an inspiration. In the wake of his death, his family has been left seeking answers and justice.
The investigation into the double homicide is ongoing. However, police have not publicly identified any suspects or a possible motive for the shooting. To date, no arrests have been made in connection with the deaths of Aaron Sutton and Oz Shiheed Tatum. The lack of progress in the case has been a source of continued pain for a family still grieving the violent loss of a beloved son and brother.
