J’Lyn Quinones, an 18-year-old female, was fatally shot on April 20, 2021, in Capitol Heights, Maryland. At the time of her death, Quinones was pregnant, and although she succumbed to her injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital, her baby was delivered via emergency surgery and was expected to survive. The shooting occurred as Quinones and another woman were crossing Quinn Street near Southern Avenue. After being shot, both victims ran across the border into Washington D.C.

The investigation led to the arrest of three suspects from Washington D.C.: 21-year-old Malik Johnson, his 22-year-old brother Michael Johnson, and 23-year-old Bianca McDuffie. Authorities identified Malik Johnson as the alleged shooter. Michael Johnson, who was reportedly in a relationship with Quinones, is believed to be the father of her child.
Malik Johnson was charged with first and second-degree murder, as well as two counts of attempted first and second-degree murder. Michael Johnson and Bianca McDuffie faced charges of accessory after the fact to first-degree murder, accused of assisting Malik Johnson in evading arrest. The three suspects were located and taken into custody at McDuffie's home in Washington D.C. pending extradition to Prince George's County. While arrests have been made, the motive for the shooting was still under investigation.
