In the early morning hours of July 26, 2021, a fatal and senseless act of violence cut short the life of Kevin Andrew Glendenning. The 31-year-old male was inside a Royal Farms store on Pulaski Highway in Rosedale, Maryland, when a dispute erupted between two women and a store employee regarding the sale of cigarettes. The conflict escalated, prompting the women to summon a man to the location.
Kevin Glendenning, who was a customer at the store, chose to intervene in the escalating
confrontation. Following his intervention, the man who had been called to the scene, later identified as Ervin Meeks Jr., exited the building. In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, a clerk locked the glass doors of the convenience store. Tragically, Meeks then fired a gun through the locked doors, striking Glendenning multiple times in the back and upper body. Kevin Glendenning succumbed to his injuries at the scene, leaving behind a young son.
For the next seven months, Ervin Meeks Jr. evaded capture. The search for the man responsible for Glendenning's death came to an end in March 2022, when he was arrested in Calvert County during a traffic stop. At the time of his arrest, Meeks initially provided law enforcement with a false identity. He was taken into custody on drug and weapons charges, and it was discovered that he had outstanding warrants in both Baltimore County and Baltimore City.
In April 2024, Ervin Meeks Jr. pleaded guilty to a charge of first-degree murder in the death of Kevin Glendenning. As a result of his guilty plea, he was sentenced to life in prison, with all but 45 years of the sentence suspended. The resolution of the court case brought a measure of justice to the family of Kevin Glendenning, who had been described by his father as the most precious thing in his life.
