In the quiet community of Linkwood, Maryland, the life of 77-year-old Douglas Washington McKnight was brought to a tragic and unexpected end on a Sunday afternoon. On October 17, 2021, deputies from the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the 3700 block of Ocean Gateway following a report of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Mr. McKnight, who had been fatally shot and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The investigation into the death of the elderly man was quickly taken over by the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit.
The investigation into the homicide moved swiftly, and within a couple of days, two suspects were taken into custody. One of the individuals arrested was Douglas Lamont McKnight, the 50-year-old son of the victim. He was charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, robbery, and the use of a firearm in a violent crime. The second suspect was identified as 43-year-old Octavius Ralphfawn Thomas, who also faced charges of first-degree and second-degree murder, with the possibility of additional charges pending.

An autopsy conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore confirmed that Douglas Washington McKnight's death was a homicide resulting from multiple injuries.
