In the late afternoon of November 17, 2021, a sequence of events unfolded in University Park, Maryland, that would end in the tragic death of 19-year-old Luis Miguel Utrera of Hyattsville. Officers from the University Park Police Department were dispatched to the 4000 block of Underwood Street around 2:35 p.m. following a report of a shooting and a vehicle crash. Upon their arrival, they discovered a car that had collided with a tree. Inside the driver's seat was Utrera, who was suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Prince George's County Police Department took charge of the homicide investigation and, through various investigative techniques, identified 18-year-old Andres Aguilar of University Park as the suspect. Authorities allege that the motive for the shooting was a drug-related robbery. An arrest warrant was issued for Aguilar, charging him with first and second-degree murder and other related charges.

The search for Aguilar concluded on January 19, 2022, when he was taken into custody in the District of Columbia by the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force. Following his arrest, he was held in the District, awaiting extradition to Prince George's County to face the murder charges brought against him in connection with the death of Luis Miguel Utrera.
