In the winter of 2021, a young Black man named Amir Whyee, 21, was fatally shot in Southwest Baltimore. The incident took place on the afternoon of December 1st, in the 500 block of Random Road. Responding to a report of a shooting, police found Whyee suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to a hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Whyee's death led Baltimore Police Department detectives to identify 25-year-old Dorrell Jackson as the
suspect. Less than a month after the shooting, on December 29, 2021, Jackson was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. The events leading to the fatal encounter began earlier that same day with Jackson robbing another man at gunpoint just a short distance away. During that earlier incident, Jackson forced the man to strip naked and surrender his belongings, expressing a belief that there was a bounty on his head.
Less than five hours later, Jackson confronted Amir Whyee. Unlike the previous victim, Whyee refused Jackson's demand to strip. This refusal led to Jackson shooting Whyee in the leg. What followed was a calculated decision, as prosecutors would later argue. After the initial shot, a brief pause occurred before Jackson fired a second, fatal shot to Whyee's head. This interval was considered by the court to be sufficient time for premeditation.
Dorrell Jackson's defense attorney argued for a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter, claiming the act was not premeditated and that Jackson was paranoid due to being shot six months prior and believed people were trying to kill him. However, the court rejected the claim of imperfect self-defense. In February 2023, a Baltimore City Circuit Court judge found Dorrell Jackson guilty of first-degree murder, use of a deadly weapon with intent to injure, and four other weapons-related charges. Following his conviction, Jackson was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Amir Whyee.
