In the early morning hours of Christmas Eve in 2021, the small town of Trappe, Maryland, was shattered by a violent act that claimed the life of 33-year-old Marta Merina. Shortly after 6:15 a.m., law enforcement officers from the Maryland State Police and deputies from the Talbot County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the 2900 block of Howell Point Road following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered a grim scene; Marta Merina was found outside of her home, having sustained an apparent gunshot wound. Despite the immediate response from emergency medical services, her injuries were fatal, and she was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The investigation into the suspicious death was quickly initiated by the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit. As investigators delved into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, they identified a suspect believed to have known Merina prior to the incident. A felony warrant for first-degree murder was issued for the arrest of Mauricio Ibarra Juarez, a 31-year-old man from Winchester, Virginia. Authorities warned the public that Juarez should be considered armed and dangerous and might be traveling in a white GMC Sierra truck.

The search for Juarez spanned several months and crossed international borders. In March 2022, he was located and apprehended by Mexican authorities in Oaxaca, Mexico, for an unrelated crime. The U.S. Department of Justice's Office of International Affairs collaborated with Mexican prosecutors to secure his provisional arrest in April 2022. The extradition process was set in motion and granted in October of the same year, though it was deferred until Juarez completed his sentence in Mexico. Finally, in October 2024, Mauricio Ibarra Juarez, then 32, was extradited to Maryland to face justice for the death of Marta Merina. He was charged with first and second-degree murder, along with other related criminal charges, and is being held at the Talbot County Detention Center without bond.
