In the quiet community of Temple Hills, Maryland, a night of work turned into a tragedy for Abdul Rauf Khan, a 71-year-old Pakistani American man from Springfield, Virginia. On the evening of February 26, 2022, Khan, a hardworking Lyft driver, was found shot multiple times in the 3700 block of Dunlap Street. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries a few hours later. His vehicle had been stolen, leaving his family to piece together the terrifying last moments of his life.
Khan was a beloved figure in his community, known for owning the popular Chutney restaurant in Alexandria for many years. He had taken on the job of a ride-share driver to help save money for his 16-year-old daughter's college education. His wife, Saba, a teacher in Fairfax, and his family were left devastated by the senseless act of violence that took the pillar of their lives.
The hours following the discovery of an unidentified man with gunshot wounds were agonizing for his loved ones, who had been frantically trying to reach him. It wasn't until the early hours of the next morning that police confirmed their worst fears.
The investigation into Khan's death moved swiftly. Within days, Prince George's County police announced the arrest of a 17-year-old male. The teenager, who was a passenger in Khan's Lyft, confessed to shooting him during a carjacking. He was charged as an adult with first-degree murder and carjacking. Two other individuals were also found in Khan's stolen vehicle. Another 17-year-old was arrested in connection with a separate carjacking that police believe involved Khan's stolen car. A 19-year-old, Daquan Childs of D.C., was charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle. The tragic case highlighted a broader issue of increased carjackings involving juveniles in the region.
