On the night of April 3, 2022, a 22-year-old male, Troy Gross, was shot and killed in Baltimore, Maryland. The incident occurred on the 2500 block of West Patapsco Avenue following a heated argument. Gross was transported to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The events leading to the fatal shooting began with a dispute between Karl Wallace, 35, and his girlfriend, who was Gross's mother.
Gross, after being informed of the argument by his sister over the phone, went to his mother's residence and became involved in the altercation with Wallace. The confrontation escalated, resulting in an exchange of gunfire between the two men. Gross was struck multiple times by the shots fired by Wallace.
Following an investigation by the Baltimore Police Department, Karl Wallace was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, firearm use in a felony violent crime, firearm possession with a felony conviction, and having a handgun on his person. The case proceeded to trial in May 2023. Wallace's defense attorney argued that his client acted in self-defense, stating that Gross had drawn a handgun first, prompting Wallace to fire in fear for his life.
On May 19, 2023, before the closing arguments were presented, a Baltimore City Circuit Court judge granted the defense's motion for a judgment of acquittal. As a result, Karl Wallace was acquitted of all charges related to the death of Troy Gross.
