James Robert Kennedy, the Sheriff of Abbeville County, South Carolina, met a tragic end on December 30, 1900. His death occurred under violent circumstances while he was performing his duties as a law enforcement officer. Sheriff Kennedy was attempting to arrest a suspect who had just shot another man over a two-dollar card game. The suspect, after shooting the man, was pursued by two policemen but managed to hold them at bay with his pistol until Sheriff Kennedy arrived.
