In the early hours of a Tuesday in Abbeville, South Carolina, the quiet was broken by the sound of gunfire, a tragic prelude to the discovery of 26-year-old Jahvious Devonta Strong-Smith, a Black male, who was found lifeless in the breezeway of the Oakland Park Apartments on May 24, 2022. Responding to a call around 12:30 a.m., Abbeville Police Department officers arrived at the scene to find Strong-Smith with a fatal gunshot wound to the chest.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving behind a community to grapple with the sudden violence.
The grim findings of that day were not to be the last. Later that afternoon, around 12:45 p.m., the body of another man, 30-year-old Henry Dawson, was discovered in a wooded area near the same apartment complex. Dawson, a resident of the complex, had also succumbed to a gunshot wound, his to the upper torso. The close proximity and timing of the two deaths prompted a significant law enforcement response, with the Abbeville Police Department, the Abbeville County Sheriff's Office, and the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division all launching a joint investigation into the tragic events.
