William Alvah Clyde, a 29-year-old police officer from Sumter, South Carolina, tragically lost his life on January 20, 1908. Officer Clyde was attempting to arrest a fugitive who had escaped from a chain gang two months earlier. Acting on information that the fugitive was hiding in a house in the Bradford Springs area, Officer Clyde, accompanied by a constable, went to the location to apprehend the suspect.
