Deputy Sheriff Marcus Lyman Whitfield, aged 27, tragically lost his life on August 13, 1999, in Greenville, South Carolina. He was fatally shot while attempting to break up a fight outside a Waffle House restaurant. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning when Whitfield and two other deputies responded to a disturbance call.
