Lieutenant Randy Gerald, a 47-year-old officer from Conway, SC, tragically lost his life on December 29, 2001. Lt. Gerald was returning home from his shift at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center when he encountered what appeared to be a traffic accident on Highway 701 North. As he stopped to assist, he noticed a man arguing with a woman and holding a pistol.
