On a cool evening in Conway, South Carolina, a dedicated public servant’s life was tragically cut short. Randy Gerald, a 47-year-old male Lieutenant with the Horry County Sheriff's Office, was on his way home from his shift at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center on December 29, 2001, when he observed what he believed to be a car accident. His commitment to protecting and serving the community prompted him to stop and offer assistance.
As he approached the scene, it became evident that
this was not a mere traffic incident but a volatile domestic dispute. Still in his uniform, Lieutenant Gerald was recognized as a law enforcement officer by the male individual involved in the altercation. Without warning, the man, later identified as Boyd Meekins, opened fire on Lieutenant Gerald, fatally wounding him. In the ensuing chaos, the female victim of the domestic dispute was able to escape to safety, a direct result of Lieutenant Gerald's selfless intervention.
A massive manhunt was launched for the suspect, who fled the scene after the shooting. Approximately 24 hours later, Boyd Meekins was apprehended by law enforcement.
