In the early morning hours of August 24, 2019, a dispute at The American Tavern in Conway, South Carolina, escalated into fatal violence that claimed the life of 24-year-old Jamarr White. Reports indicate that Conway and Coastal Carolina University police were initially called to the Cove Apartments for a reported fight. While en route, they received information about shots being fired and a victim located in the parking lot of a nearby Circle K gas station.
The investigation later determined the shooting had transpired at the tavern on S.C. Highway 544.
Jamarr White was found to have been shot twice in the upper body and succumbed to his injuries. Another man, Dequan Wilson, was also injured in the shooting, sustaining a gunshot wound to the back. The incident was not a random act of violence, as further investigation revealed connections to a previous homicide.
In connection with the shooting that resulted in White's death and Wilson's injury, police arrested Dorian Derrell Williams. He was subsequently charged with murder and attempted murder. The investigation into the shooting also highlighted a complex history involving Dequan Wilson, who had been previously charged with murder in a 2015 case.
