In a tragic turn of events on November 29, 2019, a young man's life was cut short in Conway, South Carolina, following a physical altercation that escalated to gunfire. Charles “CeeJay” Hemingway Jr., a 21-year-old male, was found shot at a residence on Mayfield Drive.
The incident began as a fistfight between Hemingway and another man, Aarin Jamal Michael, inside Michael's mother's home. During the struggle, a gun fell from Michael's pocket.
After the fight concluded, as Hemingway was attempting to recover in a hallway, Michael retrieved the firearm.
What followed was a senseless act of violence. Michael fired two shots at Hemingway before fleeing the scene. The wounds proved fatal for the young man. Ten days after the shooting, law enforcement located and arrested Michael in Loris, approximately 14 miles away from the crime scene.
In January 2022, Aarin Jamal Michael, then 29, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. A circuit court judge subsequently sentenced him to 20 years in prison for the killing of Charles Hemingway Jr. Under the terms of his sentence, Michael is required to serve a minimum of 17 years before he becomes eligible for supervised release.
