In the quiet neighborhood of Conway, South Carolina, the morning of February 1, 2024, was shattered by the sound of gunfire. Ja'Mir Johnson, an 18-year-old male, was waiting for the school bus at the corner of Rufus Street and Eighth Avenue when he was fatally shot. A senior at Carolina Forest High School, Johnson was an aspiring musician who had just celebrated his birthday two weeks prior. He died at the scene of the shooting, which appeared to be a drive-by incident.
A nearby home's security camera captured the sound of multiple gunshots and the squeal of tires as a vehicle sped away.
The Conway Police Department quickly launched an investigation into the homicide. They identified a vehicle of interest, a dark-colored Hyundai Elantra, and appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the whereabouts of the car or the identification of those involved. Despite the public plea and a $5,000 reward for information, tips were slow to come in. The police have since located the vehicle and are processing it for forensic evidence, but as of late March 2024, no arrests have been made in connection with Ja'Mir Johnson's death.
In a significant development, the investigation into Johnson's murder uncovered his alleged involvement in a separate homicide that had occurred just three weeks earlier. On January 10, 2024, 25-year-old Ty'ree Leonardo Graham was shot and killed on Hemingway Street, less than a mile from where Johnson would later be gunned down. Arrest warrants released in late March revealed that police believe Johnson conspired with 22-year-old Justice Jhamere Bright to rob and kill Graham. Bright was arrested on March 24 and is facing charges related to Graham's death. While police are investigating the possibility that Johnson's death was in retaliation for Graham's murder, they have not yet found conclusive evidence to support this theory. The investigation into both fatal shootings remains ongoing.
