On a September evening in 2020, the life of 19-year-old Jamie Devon Johnson was cut short in a calculated act of violence in Conway, South Carolina. The young man, a male, was found deceased inside his vehicle on D Street, the victim of a fatal shooting that authorities would later describe as a premeditated ambush. An earlier altercation had set the stage for the deadly encounter, leading to a planned retaliation against Johnson.
Investigators pieced together the events of that day,
revealing a grim narrative of surveillance and entrapment. A group of individuals, led by Tronahz Jahmarius Whittington, who was 17 at the time, had been tracking Johnson's movements. They were aware of his routine and lay in wait for him near his own neighborhood. The assailants then used their vehicle to cut off Johnson, trapping him in his car before unleashing a barrage of gunfire. Johnson was struck in the back of the head and died at the scene.
The ensuing investigation led to the arrests of multiple suspects. Tronahz Whittington, identified by prosecutors as the 'trigger man' who distributed firearms to the others, fled the area but was later apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Greenville. In March 2023, Whittington, then 20, was convicted of murder, three counts of attempted murder, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. He was subsequently sentenced to 45 years in prison.
Three other men, Che Ransom, 20, Don Brown, 20, and Travontae Mitchell, 19, were also charged in connection with Johnson's death. In May 2023, following a joint trial, all three were found guilty of murder and three counts of attempted murder. Each was sentenced to 45 years for the murder charge and 30 years for the attempted murder charges. Prosecutors highlighted the collaborative effort between law enforcement and the community in bringing justice for Jamie Johnson and his family. Two other individuals were also facing charges related to the case.
