In a quiet neighborhood in the Conway area of South Carolina, the peace was shattered on the evening of May 22, 2019, by the sound of gunshots. Inside a home on Greenleaf Drive, 57-year-old Charles Lawrence was found deceased, having suffered from multiple gunshot wounds. Neighbors knew Lawrence, also called 'Chuck,' as a helpful man who often did yard work for his girlfriend. His death marked a sudden and violent end to a life familiar to many in the close-knit community.
When Horry County police responded to the shooting, they found the suspect, 26-year-old Taylor Ryan Strode, outside the residence with a gun. Strode, who was the son of Lawrence's girlfriend, did not immediately surrender to the authorities. This led to a standoff, during which SWAT and police negotiators were called to the scene. After a period of negotiation, Strode was taken into custody without further incident. He was subsequently arrested and charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
Following his arrest, Taylor Ryan Strode was booked into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center. During his initial court appearance, a judge determined that due to the nature of the charges, bail could only be set by a circuit court judge. The case was proceeding through the legal system, and Strode was scheduled to stand trial for the murder of Charles Lawrence. However, the trial would never take place. In May 2022, when Strode failed to appear in court, authorities were sent to locate him. They discovered that Taylor Ryan Strode had died by suicide, bringing a somber and unexpected end to the murder case.
