In the winter of 2011, the community of Aiken, South Carolina, was shaken by the loss of one of its own. Master Public Safety Officer Edward Scott 'Scotty' Richardson, a 33-year-old male, died from gunshot wounds sustained during a traffic stop on the evening of Tuesday, December 20, 2011. A twelve-year veteran of the Aiken Department of Public Safety, he was a respected figure known for his dedication to the community he served.
The fatal encounter unfolded shortly before 9:00 p.m.
on Brandt Court, near Camellia Street. Officer Richardson and another officer had stopped a suspicious vehicle that was being sought in connection with an earlier incident. As the officers engaged with the occupants of the car, one of the individuals opened fire. Officer Richardson was struck and fatally wounded. His partner was also hit, but was saved by his protective vest. Officer Richardson was rushed to Georgia Health Sciences University Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of the following morning, December 21, 2011.
The investigation that followed led to the arrest of several suspects. In the end, one of the individuals, Joshua Jones, pleaded guilty in connection with the murder. Another man, Troy Carter, who was identified as the shooter, also faced justice. In January of 2015, Troy Carter was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of Officer Richardson, bringing a close to the legal proceedings and ensuring that the man responsible for the officer's death would be held accountable for his actions. The loss of Officer Richardson left a lasting impact on his family, including his wife and three young children, as well as the entire Aiken community and the law enforcement brotherhood.
