In the late summer of 2016, the life of 21-year-old Denzel DeMarcus Bates, a Black male from Aiken, South Carolina, was tragically cut short. On September 21, 2016, Bates, a young father and the owner of Cutting Edge Lawn Maintenance, was discovered deceased in the bed of a Dodge pickup truck on Rushton Road. An investigation by the Aiken County Coroner's Office later confirmed that he had died from multiple gunshot wounds.
